How do the electromagnetic waves function in a mobile phone?

Say you call somebodies mobile/cell phone from your mobile/cell phones, the sound waves produced in the larynx are converted into mechanical waves (longitudinal wave) which then travels into the mobile/cell phone, which is then converted into electrical energy, then the electrical energy is convered to a radio wave then transmitted to the phone tower.



What happens after that? Does it get converted back into electrical energy then sent through fibre optic cables to a switching centre before reaching the other persons mobile/cell phone? Can someone explain it to me?
