Are prepaid mobile phone numbers portable to other mobile plans and/or traditional phone lines or VOIP?

Basically, can I signup for a prepaid plan from ATT/Cingular, T-mobile, Verizon/Alltel to use the phone number until I get an office line setup, and then transfer that number to a permanent land line? Are prepaid mobile phone numbers portable to other mobile plans and/or traditional phone lines or VOIP?It is likely that you can port the number.

The key to number porting is to contact the new service provider and find out if they can port numbers from the phone exchange your want to port your number from.

With number porting, you always have to have an active paid-up account with the number you want to port. Contact the new service provider and start the poring process with them. Once the number is ported, then cancel the old service.

Do not cancel the old service before completing the number porting process. If you do, it cannot be ported once your account with the old service is expired.
