Phone carriers lock phones so that they can be used only on their own network. If a phone is unlocked it can be used on any network though. I am not 100% sure how unlocking a phone is accomplished. A google search will probably provide you with some info.
If all else fails go out to walmart and buy a T-Mobile pre-paid phone. You can pick one up for like $20. Only AT%26amp;T can give you that if you have proff of payment for the phone and are still a current customer. (won't hurt to call anyway 800-331-0500)
OR... you can find places online to BUY an unlock code.
