Are Muslims allowed to own cats as pets for leisure?

I know that Muslims are not allowed to own dogs as pets for pleasure, because in their beliefs, dogs are 'unclean'. They can however own a dog for hunting, or for human aid (seeing-eye dogs for the blind).

I was just wondering whether cats are able to be kept as normal house-pets? I can imagine that a Muslim may own a cat for mouse-hunting, but are you allowed to own a cat as a pet just for pleasure? In other words, are domestic cats considered 'unclean'?

Thank you!Are Muslims allowed to own cats as pets for leisure?I adore animals, I owned a lot of pets, cats, dogs, birds, fishes, rabbits, turtles etc. I love riding, but I couldnt own a horse yet (:

no problem owning pets (except purposes u counted), cats or dogs in Islam. just if u own then it s ur obligation to feed them, make them comfort(heat, place, hygiene, health care etc..), LOVE them. u must do these for dogs too. just we dont allowed to let dogs come inside our living areas(rooms we eat, sleep...but balconies, gardens..ok)

and like friends said, science today says other allowed animals more hygienic for us than dogs. Are Muslims allowed to own cats as pets for leisure?
Hello, Cats are fine. They are considered clean. There's even a hadith which mentions that a wife of the Prophet Muhamed(peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) was praying and someone brought her a dish of food. A cat ate from the dish before she was finished, she saw this and ate from the same dish herself, so cats are not considered "unclean". There was also a companion of the Prophet(peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) called Abu Hurayrah, which means father of the kitten, because he always had cats. Are Muslims allowed to own cats as pets for leisure? It is sunnah to keep cats near the mosque, because they prevent rodents etc.As far as pleasure goes, there was a sahabah or companion of the prophet who was called Abu Hurairah or father of the kitten because he had so fond of cats.I am Muslim and my family has always kept cats as pets.I love them, they are such serious little creatures.

There are considered "clean" animals,If a dog eats from a vessel, that vessel must be washed 7 times before a human can eat from it,for a cat it only once. They are also naturally more hygenic than dogs. Are Muslims allowed to own cats as pets for leisure?
Yes I have had 5 cats over the years and my last cat I was able to keep when I converted to Islam :)

And the people above me are Christians, I know better, they are allowed to have cats because cats are clean...

But don't abuse your pets like what sparkles does because it's the same as abusing a human being, sparkles what happened to the ethics and morals? Are Muslims allowed to own cats as pets for leisure?Yes, you may own a cat it is not unclean. I've even heard of Muslims owning dogs, but keeping them either in the garage or outside only (if they live in a warm enough area).
Cats ARE allowed in islam for pleasure, and thats a fact. Many many muslim people have cats, theres nothing wrong with it.Are Muslims allowed to own cats as pets for leisure?
Cats are fine, not forbidden.
yes they canAre Muslims allowed to own cats as pets for leisure?
Ok... know better now... cats are alright. Dogs need to stay out of living areas... It's not in the Qur'an (I would have seen that, I own one)... but it might be in the Hadith.
