Why do people buy pets before reading anything about them?

I cannot understand why people think it is a good idea to buy pets because they think they are cute, but know nothing about how to properly care for them. If you want an animal you should research as much as possible before bringing them home. When you have a pet you control their entire world. You at least owe it to them to know how to feed them!

Can anyone shed some light on this? Why do people buy pets before reading anything about them?Honestly, because many people are stupid... and in the present culture (particularly in the US), a lot of people are lost, lonely, and dissatisfied with life, so they buy pets (and other things) selfishly - it's about what the buyer wants/needs, not about the animal. It's another futile attempt at fulfillment and/or satisfying social needs, and just like as much junk as people buy from malls, online retailers, etc, the pets end up discarded for the next quick-fix remedy or more retail therapy.

Yeah, prospective pet owners ought to have to pass an exam before taking any animal home (and lots of shelters are wising up to this, requiring vet references, home studies, etc - almost as rigorous as the process for human adoptions).

Oh, and most people are not well-socialized as pet owners. Why do people buy pets before reading anything about them?
Honestly, you show up, see there cute wittle faces, and then it's all downhill from there....Why do people buy pets before reading anything about them?because they buy them on a whim... they see something on tv or internet and immediately go and buy one... i just cant stand it when people post on here that they cant afford to take their pet to the vet... u shouldnt have gotten a pet if u cant afford to car for it!Why do people buy pets before reading anything about them?
well, in my opinion, i think that some people buy pets thinking that they are "easy" to take care of, and then a few days later they find out it wasn't as easy as they thought it would be, and then the animal gets turned in to the animal shelter. :(Why do people buy pets before reading anything about them?People are lazy, but I don't mean you. Some just don't care, they fail to realize pets are creatures, not toys or things to own.
I dont think this is something that we will understand. Some people just dont think things through, whether through ignorance, or through sheer stupidity. Also, alot of them are kids whos parents couldnt care less what they bring home as long as it stays in their room. Who knows? The only thing we can do is try to educate them as best we can, and bring our children up respecting animals from the start.....Why do people buy pets before reading anything about them?
I must admit, I have been guilty of this in the past. When I first moved out of home one of the first things I did was go %26amp; get a kitten because it was something I was never allowed to have as a kid (we lived on a property %26amp; cats tend to kill native wildlife). He was just so cute %26amp; I couldn't resist when I saw that box of squirming fur at the markets...plus they were free %26amp; came with a bowl!

I was pretty surprised to find out just how much work a pet could be, even a cat %26amp; I was shocked when I discovered how expensive they were (vaccinations, worming, desexing, food, toys, litter, etc).

Unfortunately I also got one that had long hair %26amp; I didn't realise that I had to clean his little bottom after he went #2 so he got really gross %26amp; stinky pretty quickly.

Once I figured out that he needed help cleaning his bottom it all got better though %26amp; I had him for 2 years until he got sick %26amp; the vet said it was a congenital disorder from bad breeding %26amp; there was nothing we could do to make him better...just make him comfortable until he got too sick %26amp; then we had to put him to sleep.

So, once bitten twice shy...ever since then I have been very cautious when choosing a pet!
you sound more informed than most people.

i applaud you.Why do people buy pets before reading anything about them?
I researched a lot about my rats before I got them. Just some knew questions popped up I haven't thought about before. First time owning rats! Can't expect to know everything you know!
ooh not only that, but they start breeding them because they want babies, because babies are soooooo cute, then they are stuck with a litter of a zillion and they friggin bi*ch because they were to stupid to inform themselves first!. my fiance and i have 33 rats, 18 which are babies. but ALL of out pets have awesome housing, are always taken care of, perfectly healthy minus the 1 male we have who has chronic allergies. and get more attention then our stupid cats ever will (muhahahahahhahaa) As of right now though we finally reached out Max on the squishies since our babies have taken up all our spare cages lol, but I'm sure we'll have room soon since we have homes for most of them!
Fist of all not everyone does that. Some people really take time to consider if they have the time to take care of one. But others are just liking the cute faces. Now days most animals are left in the shelter, because the owner didn't even know how to take carae of one properly. Everyone who is getiing any type of animal try www.petfinder.com Even hamsters are brought into the shelter. Animals die every year and no one cares execpt for our animal lovers in the world who doin't even have a say. I am getting a adog, but I am not just going for the cute face, I researched all the breeds throughly and thinking about the adaption of the animal and the difficulties and positives.
I would answer this question too harshly. I don't have faith in the majority. If I operate under that assumption, I'm rarely disappointed. I know, that is extremely cynical. But it keeps me from being surprised. So sad.
