What do other rabbit lovers think about all the people saying rabbits are good pets for young children?

So many people ask what do get their young children for pets. So many respond rabbits. does this make you as mad as it makes me? They are so much responsibility. What do other rabbit lovers think about all the people saying rabbits are good pets for young children?I'm on board! I never say that rabbits would be a good pet for young children, and I often try to dissuade adults who seem like they want a cheap, low-maintenance pet.

I try to thumbs-down any answers that recommend rabbits for young children...I wish I could specify why I gave it a thumbs-down, because often the same answer will contain something helpful.

Anyway, I always try to emphasize the cost involved, that seems to drive the point home for a lot of people. At least I hope it does. What do other rabbit lovers think about all the people saying rabbits are good pets for young children?
They do take alot of work, but with help a young child can thrive along side their rabbit. I know that if I hadn't gotten my rabbits I wouldn't be who I am today, because they offer me so much joy and experience. People suggest rabbits because thye enjoy them and want others to share that feeling. What do other rabbit lovers think about all the people saying rabbits are good pets for young children?I really don't think any animal is that good of an idea for young children as pets unless their parents are willing to do most of the work. Responsibility comes with every kind of pet. I hear pet rocks are pretty easy to care for though :PWhat do other rabbit lovers think about all the people saying rabbits are good pets for young children?
You are right. A rabbit does not necessarily make a great children's pet. No pet should be the responsibility of the child anyway. It is the responsibility of the adult to care for the pet and keep their children safe too. The whole family can join in caring and loving, but the adult should always monitor all. What do other rabbit lovers think about all the people saying rabbits are good pets for young children? It makes me so mad too. Rabbits require alot of work and responsibility, an amount that most children, let alone young children can handle. The adults end up taking over, and the rabbit ends up dumped at a shelter or set loose in a park or worse- it is terrible. There may be a very few children who can manage it, and a few adults who help without resentment, but the great majority of rabbits given to children end up neglected and abused. What do other rabbit lovers think about all the people saying rabbits are good pets for young children?
You are right rabbits are alot more responsibilty than people realise.. but they are very affectionate and loving, so I would say with child say 7+ they would be great provided the parents supervise the care and make sure that the children are involved in caring for the rabbit by taking part in feeding, cleaning and playing with it..

What makes me mad is when you get stupid asking stupid questions about their pets because it is suffering with problems because they have no sense of responsibilty or any idea of how to actually care for it and it especially annoys when you see questions about breeding rabbits by people who have no idea what they are doing... %26gt;:(What do other rabbit lovers think about all the people saying rabbits are good pets for young children?
Rabbits are definitely alot of work, but i cant say its a bad pet for kids nor can say its a good one. it really depends on the child, i have a 3yr old and 9 yr old, my 9 year old is very responsible and could handle a rabbit, but i know other kids her age that probably couldnt.

All pets are a responsibility. Dogs need walks, grooming, exercise, etc.

cats need all that too.

my point-there is no pet that doesnt come with an amount of repsonsibility.
No rabbits are definitely not for young children. They are a big responsibility, they have to be kept clean, the cage clean, water bottle with fresh water. They can only eat certain foods, even though some people think that rabbits just eat any veggie. Not true some can make them very sick. Rabbits have delicate stomachs and can fall ill and die if not taken care of properly. I've seen some small kids mishandling a rabbit, grabbing them by the ears, and that is not the correct way to pick up a rabbit. Rabbits also have a delicate spine, that's why they need to be picked up carefully.
