What are early signs of rabies in pets?

What are some early signs of rabies in animals (pets)? We came home tonight and found a dead raccoon in our driveway. We have two pets, a cat and a dog that were out while we were gone and we don't know how the raccoon got there or what it died from. If it was rabies, we're hoping that our cat or dog did not mess with it. If they did, we really need to know the signs early so that we can get them to the vet as soon as possible.
