Hi people
I am just wondering what are peoples thought on greyhounds as pets particularly in ireland and the U.K
Well there's so many looking for homes but nobody seems to want to adopt them so im just wondering what people have against them and please don't say that they are all aggresive because there not.
Thanks for your responses .... in advance that is :)What are peoples opinions on greyhounds as pets?we adopted a greyhound and he was wonderful. they really don't need a lot of room because they pretty much sleep all day. and require a long walk either daily or twice a day. plus they are great for walking they stay right next to you and don't pull they are already trained they rarely bark. and are very sweet. the only thing is when they get older they have more health issues especially with their teeth because they are not properly cared for in the racing industry. What are peoples opinions on greyhounds as pets?
Actually, they make wonderful pets. In spite of their reputation, they're perfectly content being lazy couch potatoes! What are peoples opinions on greyhounds as pets? They need a lot of room and a lot of exercise. My guess is that a lot of people are not willing to take on this kind of a commitment. What are peoples opinions on greyhounds as pets?
haha well greyhounds are greyhounds in america, china, or the uk, lol, but i don't have a problem with them. they are wonderful dogs, quiet, they don't shed much, and you are right, so many need homes.
I would get one but my mom won't let me. lol xD
hope i helped! :)What are peoples opinions on greyhounds as pets?I live in the US, so I can't really speak for Ireland or the UK, but I can tell you that I would love to have one as a pet. They are considered to be Velcro Dogs because they "stick to your side", literally. I think the main reason people wouldn't is because when people want a dog, they usually go straight for a puppy, whereas a greyhound is already 2-3 years old, if not older.
Honestly, I would rather have an older dog because they are already housebroken. Additionally, with a greyhound, most places will only let you adopt them if you have a fenced yard or no small animals such as cats (as they are sight hounds). Plus with their size, places may not give you a dog if you have small children.
As I said before, I would love to have one, but we can't until we get a fenced yard. Additionally, I have to wait until my son is older. He's just 17 months now, and LOVES dogs, but the nearest greyhound adoption place won't adopt to someone with children under 5 years of age.
I think there are a lot of misconceptions about greyhounds, ex-racers in particular. People may think they need tons of exercise, are aggressive to other animals, and aren't suited for living in a home since they have been kenneled the entire time they were racing. The reality is that they are huge couch potatoes and only require regular walks and a good sprint around the yard a few times, many are cat/small dog/small critter friendly, and most greyhound rescues are foster home based to give the greyhound a start at homelife and get them used to stairs, glass doors etc. I look forward to adopting a few greyhounds when I finally get a house. What are peoples opinions on greyhounds as pets?
One of the reasons people don't like to adopt greyhounds (I should think) is because they're so fast. They need a great deal of exercise. Also, hundreds of greyhounds are executed each year because they are simply not fast enough to race commercially any more. I would highly recommend adopting several (they love company) from a racing greyhound rescue organization. Something else you can do to help is to not attend greyhound races; the funds they make from admittance tickets encourage the over breeding of greyhound moms and the extremely inhumane care of racing greyhounds, not to mention all those old ones who are killed. The lucky few who are rescued are sometimes placed in pounds because they simply can't find homes. If you are considering a adopting one or two (or hopefully more), go for it! They're beautiful animals, sweet and affectionate, and very rarely aggressive. They do need long walks and a lot of running around with you in the yard or at parks.
lots of exercise
good dog thoughWhat are peoples opinions on greyhounds as pets?
I live in the USA. We have rescues for Greyhounds! People are adopting them. They are sweet gentle natured creatures who need a lot of exercise.
Greyhounds are mostly abused. People who shelter them usually behavior train them to get them ready for foster or rescue/adopt.
I have a mixed Greyhound/Black Lab. I love her! She was starved and didn't know what it was like to be on a lead. It takes patience to train a dog. Lots of people think they come out of a box...ready to do anything. NOT!
Grey hounds are great companions. I had two and they are very addicting. As they say in Greyhound world you can't have just one! They really don't need a lot of room as long as your willing to walk them or take them to meet and greets (which they love cuz they always like to meet their own kind). They don't need to walk any more than any other dog, even less sometimes depending on their age. They can curl up into a ball so small compared to their size (I was astounded when I got my first two at how much room they DIDN'T take up). Most are not aggressive (unless on the track some can be to WIN cuz that is what they are taught to WIN). They love to lay on the couch and sleep and just be loved and touched. If you get a greyhound straight off the track it's like getting a puppy because they don't know anything except cages and racing. Mary came straight to me off the track and she had no concept of walking up stairs, being able to sit on her haunches, or anything. All she knew was eat, sleep, and touch me. She loved to be loved!!! We had her from the time she was 2 till she passed away at the age of 12. She was a great companion. Remember though some are NOT small animal (i.e. cats) friendly and should not be left alone with small animals. If your going to adopt and you have cats make sure that you ask about that and if they say we THINK, go some place else. They should KNOW! They will chase and possibly kill a cat as that is what they are trained to do - get the prize. I spent a lot of time saying "No CAT" to mine just to make sure. Actually it turned out with Mary that her prey drive was low and my cat RULED her LOL. As for the other one we had - Susie - she still had a high prey drive and I would never leave my cats alone with her. She unfortunately had to find another home because of that. She was a great companion also though just I wasn't willing to give up my cats. Hope this helps and if you would like any more info just let me know. Grey hounds for life!
I did research the breed when looking for a dog, as we were considering a retired greyhound (They retire them young)
They require little exercise, they are loyal, loving pets and make wonderful dogs.
However, greyhounds have been bred and trained to CHASE, this is the reason we did not get one, as we have rabbits.
They make great pets, and considering there history of being the fastest dog, they are actually extremely lazy! Sleeping all day is their idea of heaven!
Zarago.
All the food! My friend's greyhound gets 7 cups a day. That's a huge monthly food bill.
I currently have Border Collies but a rescue Greyhound will be my choice as my retirement breed.

I haven't had a greyhound but had a whippet, they are quite similar, she loved curling up on the bed as much as going for a run, she was also very loyal. They're not highly strung and they don't need a large space to live, however both are inclined to chase cats, it's just an instinct.
We love ours dearly. And as we greyhound people know, they do not need lots of space and exercise as pets, nor are they vicious. keep promoting them as the wonderful pets they are and raising awareness of their wonderful qualities. Good luck placin go yur dogs.
