I am doing a report and I haven't found good reliable stats on how many pets are killed at shelters in the US and how much it costs the government to do that...
Any help is appreciated. :DStats on how many pets are euthanized yearly for overpopulation at shelters?it's nearly impossible to find stats from different sources that will agree on this. every locale has its own shelters - some are govt-run, some are non-profit animal shelters - and there is no single governing body that stats are reported to. there are no federal laws or organizations that require information be kept and sent in for census info on number of pets taken in, adopted and euthanized. the best you can do is get a general idea of what the numbers are, and cite the sources you got it from.
also, there is no costs projection on what the govt pays for this...because many many animal shelters are not funded in any way by govt money. my county alone has one govt-funded animal control and two non-profit animal shelters. all euthanize. any stats on costs would only reflect 1/3 of the money needed for this, not a true representation of all expenses by a long shot.
this is probably the closest i could find to something that seemed fairly official. they took what they knew for sure, then figured that this was a good representation of national trends and estimated as such. the info is several years old, but may help in some way.

and you could always generate our own projections by contacting your local animal control, like bonsylar suggests. they may not be very open to releasing that information, though, as it often puts them in a bad light if misinterpreted. so be prepared in case they don't divulge much beyond general statistics.Stats on how many pets are euthanized yearly for overpopulation at shelters? It varies by city.
