What do the police do with pets who are left in a seized home?

If the caregivers of two ferrets were arrested and the police went into the residence, what do they do with the pets? Oh, and the owners can't return to the residence. Will the owner be given them back? Will the cops just leave them there to starve to death? What do the police do with pets who are left in a seized home? When I was a dispatcher, they would call us to have Animal Control come and get them. No, they wouldn't leave them to die. Depending on the resident's cooperation, time constraints and the officer...they may even call someone at the resident's request to get the animal. In my experience, officers and dispatchers are HUGE animal lovers. What do the police do with pets who are left in a seized home? They are turned over to the local Humane Society. And if no one adopts them, then they share the same fate of all unclaimed animals at the pound - they are put to death because the state is not going to go on feeding and housing them forever. They need the space.
