I would allow my boys to have Leopard Geckos and a Ball Python, corn or king snake. They have the geckos already.
Think about exotic birds that interact with people (get hand fed/hand raised). Parrotlets, cockatiels, parakeets) are good.
Also, some fish are cool. You could get a Beta, Bali shark, Plecostamus, or, if your mom won't freak and you don't have little brothers or sisters, an Oscar (like a pihrana).
There are turtles and some pretty cool looking frogs, bugs (scorpions, walking sticks, praying mantis', ect.), and spiders (all kinds of tarantulas) out there, too.
Here's another list but you have to check to see if they are legal where you live and IMO none are cheap.

sugar glider
skunk (de-scented)
Don't write off a cat just. Go to the shelter and find a young male cat. Ours are most awesome and we have house full of boys. Plus they are cheap and easy to care for. Oh, and girls like boys that have cats. lol.
A rabbit can be cool, too, but if you are looking for something manly, a rabbit is not. :)
Remember when choosing that most boys get tired of pets that take a lot of cleaning up after and take a lot of their time, so keep that in mind.
