In my Tribe, the word for horse is Sunka Wakan, which means horse, but translated into english would mean Sacred Dog. There's a story behind the name buts its too long of a story to tell here. Here is an example of the sort of dogs we used, they were somewhat Husky/Malamute looking.

Pets were a luxury then and technically they are now. And yes as oregano said you need to do your own research rather than taking the easy way out by asking other people.
