Why do people buy pets at a store rather than a shelter?

there are plenty of very nice animals at an animal shelter, and they need homes. (by pets i mean cats and dogs). i know that people like puppies, and the shelters have puppies too, but why not adopt from an animal shelter instead. your saving a life, and giving it a better home than it had before. do people that buy pets from a store think that because they buy the pet than its better? i know that to adopt you pay a small fee to cover the microchipping and shots giving to the dog before. people will pay thousands of dollars for a dog. we adopted our dog from the dallas fort worth shih tzu rescue. she is so sweet. whenever someone come home, she does this little dance and she ballances on her legs and waves her paws in the air.Why do people buy pets at a store rather than a shelter?Yeah! I love this question!!! Good for you for adopting!

A few people on here mentioned people wanting pure bred puppies or dogs and so many don't realize that there are breed specific rescues out there.

Adopting is so the way to go. Most of the time your dog or cat will be fixed, vaccinated, and in some cases, microchipped. All for a fee that is WAY less than buying from a pet store or breeder. Plus, getting the shots and surgeries yourself will run you more than the adoption fee in most cases.

And those are just the monetary benefits of adopting. Not only are you saving a life, you are giving an animal a second chance. I can't tell you how many times people come into my store and say "Hi this is ____, I adopted him here 2 years ago and he's the best dog ever!".

These animals know they have been rescued and will thank you for it every day!

Sadly it's true that some of these animals have been abused or neglected and tend to shy away from humans. Hopefully the people at the shelters will be able to fit the animal with the family. Don't go into a shelter thinking that all of the animals will bite your hand off. The shelter workers know the animals behaviors and should be placing the dogs or cats into appropriate homes.

Don't buy or breed when millions of cats and dogs are euthanized in shelters!!!Why do people buy pets at a store rather than a shelter?
I'm so glad that you took the time with your adopted dog! There should be more people like you out there! :)

Why do people buy pets at a store rather than a shelter?I agree with you. From the 2 previous answers (no disrespect intended) you can see that their are many myths associated with shelter/rescue pets. I find it funny that a dog that is full grown is considered "old". There are many people, who for many reasons cannot keep a wonderful pet (they have developed allergies, they have become sick and cannot care for the animal, etc.) They are smart, potty and leash trained, and more importantly, give unconditional love, and are totally loyal.

I am an owner of a rescue dog (we found her abandoned on the side of a highway) and wouldn't trade my Stella for all the tea in China! Why do people buy pets at a store rather than a shelter?
I think some people are looking for a specific breed and they might not find that at a shelter. Please don't buy any dogs from a petstore. I was always taught by my mom never to buy a puppy from a petstore and guess what I did? I bought a puppy from a petstore not knowing his genetics or anything. Plus, he was VERY expensive. I know for a fact that he is from a puppy mill and all puppies at petstores are from puppy mills. I deeply regret getting my puppy from a petstore and supporting this horrible industry. I don't however regret my beautiful puppy who is now 6 months old. He's the sweetest thing with no health problems so far. I just wanted to share my story to bring more awareness to puppy mills and this industry. Why do people buy pets at a store rather than a shelter?I totally agree with you! I never buy from a store. I always go to a shelter! There are many many shelters that are overcrowded. You can find a perfect pet for you no matter which shelter you go to. You shouldn't pick a pet just because It is cute. Most shelter let you play with the animal and bond with it a little before adopting. Also even though a dog may not trust people.. that can change. When you adopt a pet and show it love and care for it properly it will soon open up to you and become a happy pet. ( in most cases) So yeah shelters are the best place. Every animal needs a loving owner and the shelter is the best place to go
People sometimes think they're somehow too good to adopt- they don't want "somebody else's dog". There's also the misconception that you have to get a puppy because otherwise you won't be able to train it or anything, which from what I've observed is not true. Also, there are people who just want a cute little puppy and then don't want anything to do with it once it grows up; thus, they would never even consider the thought of getting an adult dog.Why do people buy pets at a store rather than a shelter?
Because , for the most part, they don't think. Giving the benefit of the doubt, here... I think they aren't educated as to where those animals come from or fool themselves into not believing it. They turn a blind eye to the fact that thousands of animals a week are put to death in every city for every cute puppy "in the window", and by purchasing those animals, they are perpetuating a problem of enormous proportion. And some are just plain selfish and want a pure-bred dog, or one of those cute little hybrid teacup pocket dogs, like a puggle, because they are the latest fashion accessory. For more on where the pet store dogs actually come from, look here:
Wow! There are definitely some misconceptions out there. Most of the dogs in shelters are NOT old. Many of them are there because their families were completely clueless when they bought the puppy, and now that it pees in the house and bites, they can't wait to get rid of it. Or someone buys a puppy for a gift and the person doesn't want it. These, too, end up in shelters. Quite a few are runaways, because people can't learn to be responsible and keep their dogs safe. Some are also abused, but that doesn't make them old-abuse starts young.

I have adopted from shelters frequently, and my first dog was 9 months old (she ran away from the owners), my second dog was a puppy younger than 8 weeks, my third dog was 1 year old (she was a Katrina dog), and my fourth dog was 1 year old (she was physically abused and let go to run the streets).

In most cases, aggressive dogs are NOT adopted out by shelters because of the liability involved. These animals are usually put down.

Abused dogs can be rehabilitated into wonderful pets in most cases.

With all the myths out there about shelter animals, it's no wonder puppy mills and pet stores continue to do business. We need to quit with the urban legends and do our research properly before making statements. Why do people buy pets at a store rather than a shelter?
We have 2 dogs and 1 cat right now that were adopted from a shelter. The cat was a kitten and we have had him 12 years!!! One dog was 2 when we got him and have had him 3 years now and he is so awesome(no one knows his past) but shelters do test them to see if they can be adopted out! Teh other one is a little over 1 year old and we have had him almost a year. He's a little ornery at times--but we have had him in a training class and he is getting better daily--but that can be with any young dog!! Give them a chance--they are so loving!!!! Then keep donating to the shelter(they have limited funds)--they'll take food etc!!!
Many animals at the shelter are old. They have high medical bills due to their past owners (usually). They don't have their pedigree charts, if they had good bloodlines. They are scarred from their past owners and don't trust humans. They don't want rugged animals who lived on the street or lived in "gross" habitats in their nice fancy homes.
Most animals at the shelter are old and abused. If not this then they are ones that are fierce and do not like other animals. Most of the people who are going to adopt, have other animals. It could also be that people see animals at the shelter as "old, ugly and outdated" and they want a new viberant puppy.
