Can your put your SIM card into an outright mobile phone?

I want to buy an outright phone which is the Nokia E5 mobile phone. My current phone is a broken LG one and I'm currently with a Virgin Mobile plan. I was wondering if I buy an outright phone, can I simply take out my SIM card from my old phone and place it into the new phone? I don't mind if all my contacts and files are lost.
