What are good pets for a 13 year old?

I am 13 years old and want to know what are some good pet. I already have a dog and cant have a cat so what are good pets besides though. What are good pets for a 13 year old?Seeing as how you are 13, there are two main things you need to avoid. Long-living animals because you won't be able to keep them if you decide to go off to college or something. And high maintenence animals that require a lot of commitment and experience, unless you are sureyou are up to it.

I'm sure you already know this, but you should do thorough research on sites and books to learn all you can about an animal. You need to know everythign about them so you don't get any unpleasent surprises, and are forced to give the animal aay because of that.

Look into hamsters, dwarf and syrian, gerbils, and mice. These are really the easiest small pets to own. THey also don't take a lot of space, and are cheap.

Rats are a lot smarter and more interactive than those few, and they strongly bond to you. They do need stricter care though. Rats are social and need companions. THey also need large wire cages.

Guinea pigs are also a bit harder. They are friendly, but more timid than rats. They also need companionship form other piggies. And they also need a very large cage.

Something like a bunny, chinchilla, ferret, or bird I would not recommend. They are all either difficult to keep, or have long life spans.

You can also look into some non-mammals, such as leopard geckos, corn snakes, hermit crabs, or fish.

My nephew (he is now 15 and is starting on his 2nd round of rats - his first 2 lived long happy lives) adores his pet rats. They are small, quiet, yet very affectionate, unlike most small pets they actually seek out their human friends for company, they are not difficult to keep and can easily come on family trips. They are smart, learn tricks, and live about 3 years. Rats are very popular in England, where there are many clubs. They are growing in popularity here in US. I also have had rats in the past and quite enjoyed them.

If you don't mind the smell, I always enjoyed my ferrets as well. Just make sure no one is allergic. They are very funny characters, and intelligent. They are kind of like crossing a cat with a 2 year old after WAY to much candy, though they sleep most of the day. They can be litter trained like a cat. Mine usually had the run of the house, or my room. Just be ready to search for your shoes - they hide things frequently. What are good pets for a 13 year old?My sister is 13 and she has a 10 gallon fish tank with some fish. and also a hamster.(she doesnt like cats)

These two are really good to take care of.

For fish, you have to clean the fish tank and feed the fish. Also make sure that you get fish that get along with each other, because some types of fish are best to be kept alone because they are not so friendly. But other than that, I think fish are great! Also, keep the environment nice so the fish dont get stressful.

And about hamsters, they are really great pets, especially those syrian hamsters. They are very friendly and cuddly. Clean their cage so that it wont smell(trust me, they dont smell as bad as rabbits and ferrets, compared to them, they are a LOT better). And after you clean it, you wont smell a thing. Unlike dogs, you dont have to give hamster a bath because they clean them themselves, like cats do. Just remember to give the hamster enough food and water.

If you have any questions on pets, just email me and i will write back right away because im online now!
